Making Bread

Making Bread Process Piece

Artist Statement
Our process piece is about someone making bread.  The reason we chose to do this process is because while it may be a simple thing to do, there are many interesting sounds within the preparing and cooking process. Also, we included in this process the grinding of the wheat because that is not necessarily a common part of people making bread today. Also, the bread was made in a bread machine, which provided interesting sounds. So, overall the sounds heard in our piece are first the grinding of the wheat, second the measuring of ingredients by hand, the bread being kneaded in the bread machine, and lastly the bread being cut.
We wanted to have a quick, fast paced piece that did not have any dead space during the process.  Some of that influence came from hip hop music where there never seems to be any breaks or pauses. There is always a constant beat of the baker making this bread as each step moves to the next. Also, we selected quick dynamic sounds from the process to accentuate this style.

The viewing from class which most influenced our piece where the videos on routining.com. This websites use of hip-hop editing and stop action flare was another influence to our hi hop style choice.

TINY STORIES

Andrew drew his bat
when he heard an intruders’s tap.
He was determined to get the criminal fox,
which was nothing but a cardboard box.

Sally did quiver and hide under her blanket
when she heard an alien fluster inside her closet.

The nanny had quite a fright
when she thought she heard a rattle snake,
but it was only a baby’s rattle which did shake.

As Billy heard the bush tremble he imagined a bear among the floral.
He never realized it was but a lonely squirrel.

Two travelers in the red hills
heard a thudding which gave them chills.
It sounded like the pounding of the heart beat
of the legend dragon, and thus the travelers did retreat.

The Dillard’s “Seeing” reading demonstrated that we don’t always truly see what is before us. I feel this also applies to sound. We don’t always hear what we think we hear. For my tiny stories I wanted to tell stories in which the character/s think they know what they are hearing but their guess isn’t necessarily correct.
I wanted to base the stories in reality so I based most of the stories on true stories of my own experience or on stories I had heard. The first story was based on a story I had heard from my friend Andrew. The second story is based on my own childhood experiences of believing there was an alien in my closet. The fourth story was inspired by the squirrel from the movie, The Emperor's New Grove. And the final story is base off some extended family of mine who believe one can hear the heart beat of a dragon at the entrance of a cave in Southern Utah. By basing the stories in some reality I was hoping to make them more relatable.
When coming up with the stories I realized that many of the dealt with fear as the driving force to let the mind wander to extravagant possibilities. Therefore, one theme of these stories is that fear will lead one to accept scenarios one wouldn't normally expect or accept.
I decided to illustrate the stories through sketches so that I might fully illustrate the images which I see in my mind when I think of these stories. Also, I decided not to have any color since the aspect of fear is part of several of the stories. The that grey images of the sketches are better suited for portraying fear than a colored illustration would have been.

Alexey Romeo’s & Jury Jet’s Tango (Radio Mix), to me, is a fusion of traditional tango and modern electronic sound. I tried to visually represent these two elements of traditional tango and modern electronic sound separately as well and cohesively throughout the pieces. Pieces 1,2,4, & 7 are influenced more by the electronic sound but still maintain the traditional tango feel through the use of the colors of red and black. While pieces 3 and 8 are influenced more by the traditional tango but maintain the electronic feel through the use of color blocking and vibrant colors. In the 5th piece, I tried to have a more balanced influence of the two styles being fused together. Overall, to visually represent the song I paid attention to color, lines and curves, and the composition of the pieces.
The main thing I paid particular attention to was the colors I chose which I feel represent the music visually. The main colors were red and black with electric blue and a bit of green. The red and black are used to represent the traditional tango elements in the music while the blue and green represent the modern electronic sound. Also, I chose to use vibrant colors because of the electronic and staccato nature of the music.
Also, due to the staccato and electronic element of the music, I chose to have a more abstract and graphic overall design and feel to each image. I wanted the images to be a bit harsher by being graphic solid colors so that they would have a sharper look to them. The use of strong lines in the pieces is also reflective of the staccato and electronic nature of the music.
The curves, in particular in the more abstract pieces, are representative of how the sounds are winding and swirling together. The piece in particular which emphasizes this is the second to last piece. In this piece, the various colors are swirling together like the sounds swirl together with a bit of an echo to them.  Also, to show the elements of echo in the music I used the repetition of images throughout the pieces and within the pieces themselves. This is shown, in particular, through the last piece with the repetition of the dancers in decreasing size. Also, the lines of the background color are used to draw the eye inward to accentuate the repetition and decreasing size of the dancers.
Overall, my pieces were created to demonstrate the fusion of traditional tango and modern electronic sound of Alexey Romeo’s & Jury Jet’s Tango (Radio Mix).
